Monica Shannon is the founder and director of Open Door Yoga in Raleigh, NC. Her journey as a yogi and teacher began with Bikram Yoga in 2001, having completed Bikram’s training in the Fall of 2002. Her inspiration as a teacher and studio owner is a desire to simplify the path toward optimal benefit from Yoga. She has found that many of the modern versions of Hatha Yoga to be intimidating to most people. Striving to make yoga accessible to all, Monica started studying the Ghosh lineage with Tony Sanchez and meditation with a Raleigh teacher, Jill Marie. Since then, she has relished in opening up to the potential of working outside rigid rules about what “real yoga” is.
Monica’s teaching draws upon a lifetime of exploring the potential of mind/body relationship through gymnastics, modern dance, extensive backpacking and many injuries. Backed by a degree in Biochemistry, a great eye for mechanical alignment and over 12,000 hours of teaching, Monica can help new teachers break down the postures and make alignment easier to grasp.
